Wood Fastenings

Course Description:

The strength and stability of any structure depend heavily on the fastenings that hold its parts together. One prime advantage of wood as a structural material is the ease with which wood structural parts can be joined together with a wide variety of fastenings, and some types that will be covered in this course are: nails, spikes, screws, bolts, lag screws, drift pins, staples, and metal connectors of various types.

Learning Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Learn how to drive nails into wood to increase withdrawal resistance
  • Understand the bearing stress of wood under bolts
  • Understand why the withdrawal resistance of clinched nails is considerably greater than that of unclenched nails
