Reinforced Masonry Pier Construction

Course Description:

The purpose of this course is to provide an alternative to piles in V zones and A zones in coastal areas where soil properties preclude pile installation, yet the need for an “open foundation system” still exists. Examples of appropriate conditions for the use of piers are where rock is at or near the surface or where the potential for erosion and scour is low.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Know where masonry pier foundations are and are not recommended in coastal areas.
• Learn recommendations for masonry piers in coastal regions.
• Learn what can damage masonry construction in coastal areas.
• Learn the difference in maximum depth of erosion and scour between piers and piles.
