Characteristics and Availability of Commercially Important Woods

Course Description:

Throughout history, the unique characteristics and comparative abundance of wood have made it a natural material for homes and other structures, furniture, tools, vehicles, and decorative objects. Today, for the same reasons, wood is prized for a multitude of uses. This course will cover the following topics: timber resources and uses, species descriptions, U.S. wood species, and imported woods.

Learning Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Understand two broad classes of trees and the differences between them.
• Learn about various commercial sources of wood products.
• Learn the major resources of U.S. woods according to region
• Understand different species of woods in terms of their principal locations, characteristics, and uses.
