A Civil Perspective on Storm Water Management
Credit: 1 hour
This Educational Webinar will explore Storm Water Management in developed areas, the impervious surface such as pavement and roofs which prevent precipitation from naturally soaking into the ground. Instead, water runs rapidly into storm drains, sewer systems and drainage ditches and can cause:
Downstream flooding
Stream bank erosion
Increased turbidity (muddiness created by stirred up sediment) from erosion
Habitat destruction
Combined storm and sanitary sewer system overflows
Infrastructure damage
Contaminated streams, rivers and coastal water
Storm water is also a resource and ever growing in importance as the world’s human population demand exceeds the availability of water. Techniques of storm water management includes: harvesting with point source water management and purification can potentially make urban environments self-sustaining in terms of water.
